African Institute for Ending Bullying Depression and Suicide (AFRIBS) held it’s first edition of the Mental Health Facilitators’ Training in Bulawayo, where youths constituted a majority of delegates present for the one day workshop, on Saturday 10 August 2019.

At the forefront of the training were two young women, Zenani Masuku and Charmaine Natasha Nyakonda who are passionate in advocating for equal dissemination of information on the highly stigmatised concept of mental health.

Tertiary students who are also currently working on lobbying for mental health awareness highlighted some of the factors that lead to poor psychological strength. According to their narrative, tertiary students were quick to finger the current dwindling economy as one of the many components that are leading to the rise in cases of mental disorders among young people.

#MentalHealth Facilitators’ Training Quick Facts:  #MentalHealth affects a significant number of people in a negative manner and tends to be isolating, ● At times single mothers are faced with too many pressures and support groups can help them cope better, ● No one is ever willing to talk a person against ending their life, ● From the young men who made way to the #MentalHealth Facilitators’ training, it is uneasy for them to process their feelings without acknowledging stigma that exists, ● Varsity students felt the current economic situation in the country is fueling a rise in cases of violence, bullying (all forms) and suicide, ● People should just develop a culture of peer to peer support groups as it is a cheaper option in dealing with #Mental disorders during difficult times, ● Stigma around #MentalHealth is real. In worse scenarios it can lead to the disintegration of a society if we are not quick to act upon it while there is time, ● There isn’t a face that can define what a mental disorder looks like.

There will be another training lined up in Harare before the close of the month of August 2019.
